"It's a metaphor," she replied. "My point is that great art can make a long-lasting impression that can change the way one looks at the world, and possibly be a life-changing experience as a result. There's a lot more to art than even that."

Yakuwari takes a piece of charcoal and a piece of paper from within his sleeves.

"If Shosuro-san would be kind enough to continue," he says, "her opinion on the nature of art would be worth including in the account."

Though what art she means...perhaps it is like the eighth century, after all.

"Akodo-san, my opinions on art would be an entire account in and of itself," she replied.

Hatsuki took a moment to think before saying, "I believe that the pursuit of expression is a fundamental part of the human experience. It is something created for others, to highlight something about the world or the subject of the art or both, yet speaks of the person who created it by it's very nature. For instance, I favor makeup as an art. When I work with someone, I learn about them, and try to express the best version of them I can, or highlight some positive aspect of their nature, or a virtue. But what I perceive and end up expressing is influenced by my perspective of them, as well. And then the emotional responses that people have toward the art naturally end up applying toward the subject."

"Art is an expression of a perspective of meaning, and that meaning, or rather, the observer's point of view of the artist's intended meaning becomes part of the observer from then on."

Yakuwari's charcoal scratches rapidly across the page as he takes down Hatsuki's comments.

"Thank you," he says at length. "Although a summary, it is most informative."

As if a Scorpion is concerned with the "best self."

"Am I to understand Shosuro-san correctly that the intent of the artist bears in upon the audience? Does a bad actor then impose wrongness on the audience?"

The question comes out sincerely, rather than accusatorily.

"Mm... Yes and no, I suppose," she mused. "An artist can make their work with a certain intent that is more or less obvious, but the audience also observes it in their own way, which may have nothing to do with that. It's been interesting, seeing the contrast with the Crane focus on absolute perfection vs. the Scorpion idea of leaving things somewhat ambiguous when it comes to creating art that stays with its audience."

"A bad actor in art is more like someone who creates something really similar to another artist and takes the credit. Although..." Her thoughts wandered back to Naishou and that delirious time floating in and out of consciousness after her injury. Her gaze was far away. "... there are some truly bad actors out there. I suppose someone like that could impose wrongness into their work, somehow."

"Then there is peril even in something so pacific as this event."

Because of course there is.

"Vigilance remains needful."

[Shosuro Hatsuki]

"I mean... I don't think anything like that is in the offing, probably," she replied with a shrug. "I think it's better to keep an eye out without getting too worked up about it."

No one's being incautious in an obviously dangerous situation here. I was such an idiot... and I made Choudai have to escape with me...

She looked to the side. "Anyway... It's been lovely speaking with you, Akodo-san. I hope you have a chance to enjoy the competition between your duties." She bowed.

[Akodo Yaukwari]

"Ganbatte," Yakuwari replies, returning the bow. "And thank you for your insights."

Yakuwari rises, gathers his writing things, and makes his /exit with fitting bows.
