I... assume this is directed at me Sorry for the long ass answer but I Am Very Serious About Art Lol.

I read a lot. I like poetry so I read stuff I come across, and I read a lot of non-fiction like news, essays, studies, philosophy, and religion, again, all stuff I come across. (The first part of my Compassion poem is actually based off a translation from an ancient Egyptian ... letter, if I remember? That really stood out to me.) I keep a digital scrapbook of the things I come across for inspiration (here's my tag for Nadeshiko, I've been cultivating her character for maybe a yearish?) so if I ever want to look back at something I just go peek through it.

I also look at a lot of art; I know I got inspiration for the moonlight on the water opening of my Duty poem looking at a Japanese woodblock print of the moon reflecting on water. And I try focusing on evoking images and feelings, and specifically dip into my own internal library of things I find beautiful (I love the sound of ocean waves and cicada so I threw those in) and experiences (a LOT of the poetry I've written for Nadeshiko is informed by me remembering past flames lol). Then it's a lot of frustrated putting things down, whittling that, re-writing, and researching random things like "japanese winter animals" (actual Maus google search). I wish I could say I read a book or something but I Did Not Do That lmao

It also helps I have a lot of free time with which to write. Most people have jobs and responsibilities but my "job" is mostly managing my disability and getting care for it + maintaining my circumstances so I survive. So I have the time to just sit around and fiddle with things until I like them (usually... Duty poem was super last minute -_- thanks IRL-no-oni) That free time also gives me time to do all that reading ^ and looking at art ^

I'd really like it if more people had free time to try making art. I didn't write poetry until I found this group and saw I could play an already existing concept, and with my circumstances I had the ability to really put my all into it. I wish I could just like, give you a book or resources, but it was more time and an interest I dipped my toes into. So at the end of the day, once again, we must defeat capitalism so we can have more time to live, to love, to read, and to make art

Oh! Also! A great resource for everyone here might be the Kimono Gallery blog! It's got a great mix of old and new Japanese art and culture. I love it a looot. There's also the Met's Arms and Armor online catalogue for inspiration too ^^

And no, I don't expect to glance at a book and be good at poetry. XD There's definitely work involved! I've been known to cheat and adapt existing work for a character (with citation!), but I've appreciated Nadeshiko's poems. They flow well, are evocative, and there's all these symbols I kind of grasp, but only have a glancing background to help me there.

I do appreciate the value of time. I do a lot more culture-digging when I have it.

Also I found what inspired part of the compassion poem! It was a maxim actually.
