Looking at the next installation, she but raises an eyebrow, and moving thence to the next, she comments to Hyoukasha "I am glad to see someone has taken the point, even if it had to be made a number of times."

Which seemed to be all he had to say on the subject of kitchen space. He nodded to the Togashi- hoping to see someone's Ki-Rin, are we?- and popped one of his gyoza into his mouth.

How sad for the Crane, they prize decorum but invited artists. Tsk.

"But as my grandmother always said, the chef makes the kitchen, rather than the reverse. A lot of what I made for this display could be cooked with little more than a campfire and some portable cookware."

He paused.

"The flatbreads were actually the trickiest for me to get right- the dough had different consistency than I'm used to, and my first few batches trying the recipe out could probably be used to chisel stone."

She nods "My bread's not fit for public display, but I'm not much called on to make it. She certainly notices who else is sharing the stranger dishes, taking a moment to pluck up some of the vegetables as easy finger food, avoiding the soup for the converse reason. "How'd you come to cooking as an art form, Bayushi-san? It's not commonly considered one, is it?" Honestly, it might be one among the Scorpion, for all she knows. The villains painted in popular fiction might need some extra skill to conceal a poison in something as simple as sashimi.

Nadeshiko just blushes, and goes back for seconds, not wanting Sriyani to feel awkward eating alone... and... well... as she said, it's not bad. The texture's actually kind of nice. If a Crane shares it, other people will, maybe, feel comfortable. That's what she'd like, anyway.

Or maybe she's just stupid.

Eventually she mumbles, "Courtesy belongs to every Rokugani," between bites. Now that her Unicorn friend's joined them she suddenly feels very shy.

The Crane thinks a moment, considering her answer. "The Lady did bless us with Courtesy and decorum, but even among the most wise of Crane there's intense discussion of what Courtesy is and how it is to be expressed. To act within etiquette is simply the beginning. One can most certainly reduce it to correct action, but Courtesy in its highest form is embodying not just your own humanity, but acknowledging the humanity in others and acting humanely, most especially in circumstances where one could turn away from another and choose the lesser path." Her flush grows worse; she's probably spoken too much. But still... "I have seen and known many outside my Clan who've embodied Courtesy. I feel I've learned much from the example of others."

Yakuwari's stomach makes quiet noises.

The Legionnaire Kaiu Kunio was absent from the gathering, though his contribution to it was present and showed excellent craftsmanship. Similarly excellent was the artwork displayed by Togashi Yoshiaki, one calculated to please our hosts. The work of Asahina Asano was also good, showing the Empire as a tree in many colors.

The elder, Mirumoto Jakuchou, made quite the statement with her piece, responding to the prompted insults of her lessers with quiet acceptance rather than the rebuke that would have been earned had they not been bidden act thus. Her readiness to defend them against harangue for acting at her bidding was perhaps a better embodiment of the ideal than the performance itself.

Bayushi Amieko played flute again, performing competently even if the alignment to courtesy was less than clear. And perhaps it unsettled her Clan-mate, Shosuro Hatsuki, whose reaction to her own work betrayed that her ambition had exceeded her skill in this event.

Kakita Mikan contributed again, as well.

Horiuchi Shuriyani addressed the ancestral courtesies shown her people by our host's, the work done well, but though the reminder of our common fate embedded in her work is appropriate, its alignment to courtesy was not entirely clear.

Kitsune Shizenko's efforts were clear, however, and the many, many repetitions of gifting bore it out. The origami presented to the event's chronicler--a tanuki--is enclosed.

"My grandmother taught me in her kitchen, and... it was how she expressed herself outside of the confines of her Duty."

He chuckled.

"Obachan said her singing would make a crow sound melodious, but that she had a great deal of time working with food under adverse circumstances, and she had learned to present it as artwork to keep spirits up."

And while she probably would have rolled her eyes at today, she also would have laughed with me about it later. I actually punctured the judge's usual double-act.

And then, in honor of Sriyani's player's bandwidth, he could be assumed to return to idle chatter with anyone passing by... although he observed Hatsuki's departure with barely-concealed concern.

"I think so, too. Compassion and Courtesy are sisters," And her voice grows warm in fondness, thinking of her own 'sister'. "It is all rather confusing, isn't it? Both seem so easy, yet in practice they're fickle and tricky, easy to bungle." Case in point: the woman speaking.
