(D2, EE) Discussion of the Art of Jin

[Kakita Hyoukasha]

Admist of riot of artistic displays all devoted to Jin, contestants have some time in between judging to appreciate each others works, discuss art, and hear the words of the judges.

[Bayushi Choudai]

Choudai knew his display wouldn't be for everyone's tastes, but he was fairly happy with how it had come off.

And besides, dressed down, in a different mask from his usual, he kind of enjoyed not presenting his usual face to the public.

And the weight of Oba-chan's gift to him in the furoshiki over his shoulder was... pleasant.

[Shosuro Hatsuki]

Hatsuki joined the crowd milling about soon after her art was judged. About as highly as Choudai's, she couldn't help but think. It put a little bit of bounce in her step.

She continued to wear her makeup design... because really, why wouldn't she? It's makeup, it's meant to be worn and seen in.

She milled about, checking out the other works.

Akuba smiles tightly. Then she raises a fan and turns to her husband, saying something, shaking her head slightly.

In the corner, Yakuwari sits, writing materials spread before him.

The first contest in the Tournament was dedicated to the noble virtue of Jin. Leadership tells us that a samurai "helps his fellow men at every opportunity. If an opportunity does not arise, he goes out of his way to find one." Concomitantly, willingness and ability to aid would seem to have been the foci of displays, the first of which was given by Shosuro Hatsuki, who made of her face a canvas of an evocative painting on the matter.

The second display was more direct. Bayushi Choudai cooked an accessible meal, using what appeared to be older cookwares--and with great familiarity. His explanation of his meal was focused and direct, which was appreciated.

[Doji Nadeshiko]

Nadeshiko, having had her chance in front of the judges, now wanders through the crowds. Half-open eyes are cast downward except to peek at art on display. Occasionally she squints them closed, stops in her tracks, waits, then opens them again to keep looking. Pressed against her heart is her tea cup.

[Asako Horuden]

Horuden joined the discussions, ready to brew and share coffee. As well as discuss and demonstrate it, at length. Exchanging coffee haiku or koans was acceptable too.

[Akodo Yaukwari]

Yakuwari continues.

One Doji Nadeshiko presented kintsugi and poetry in tandem, although her presentation was swiflty overshadowed. An Asako Horuden followed her with stunning calligraphy, and a Kakita Mikan made a different presentation altogether, although it is notable that she did not remain in place with her installation. Eminently understandable, in the event.

Hatsuki immediately found her after seeing Mikan's display, speaking quietly behind her fan. "Nadeshiko-san... Are you all right?"

A slightly distracted Mantis courtier had initially thought the Phoenix monk to be brewing tea, which wasn't all that remarkable. Kami know I'm drinking enough of that while I'm here, Tatsuya had thought. But then he'd caught a whiff of... Not any tea he'd ever encountered before, and the young Moshi's curiosity overcame his previous distraction. He couldn't resist something so new to him.

"Ah, Phoenix-san, might this one inquire about your chosen drink there?" Tatsuya said as he approached, giving just a small bow before straightening. "This one is Moshi Tatsuya and, ah, unfamiliar with the scent I noticed," he said with at least some genuine warmth in his voice.

"Nadeshiko-san... Are you all right?"

"Hm?" She blinks as her head turns, a little confused. Nadeshiko's not seen Mikan's work yet. "Hatsuki-san!" Her eyes turn up, catch a glimpse of her makeup, and go wide. The subtlety asks you to look further. "Yes, I'm well, thank you. And you?"

Hm, do I really look like that when dismayed by some Crane? Goodness, how awkward.

Choudai wasn't particularly upset on his own behalf, since a Scorpion being the butt of a Crane barb was fairly routine.

But he was slightly appalled that one Crane had chosen to portray another in that light. Especially since, so far as he could tell, Nadeshiko was a pleasant-natured sort.

I wonder if it's some performance art notion of seeing which of us demands satisfaction for the insult first?

"Hm?" She blinks as her head turns, a little confused. Nadeshiko's not seen Mikan's work yet. "Hatsuki-san!" Her eyes turn up, catch a glimpse of her makeup, and go wide. The subtlety asks you to look further. "Yes, I'm well, thank you. And you?"

"I'm quite well, aside from a little... troubled," she said genteely. "Have you seeing Kakita Mikan's submission yet?"

[Doji Nadeshiko]

She shakes her head and, leaning in, whispers, "What's wrong?" Nadeshiko's eyes close as she goes back in to Peopleing mode from Art mode.

The work presented by Matsu Inori was composed well and explained appropriately, as would only be expected by one so familiar with Bushido and its tenets as she.

An installation of a rainbow of poems in sequence from Doji Yoshino followed. The integration of olfactory elements was an unusual touch, but it was pleasingly done. The following tattoo presentation by Togashi Yoshiaki was also dramatic, not least because of its overt dedication to Shosuro Otoko, about whom much seems to be said at the Tournament. One wonders what influence she has on so many.

After the judges moved on from his piece Yoshiaki thanked his brother and then they parted and Yoshiaki began to mingle among the crowd. His disposition was hard to read as it always was, he never really wore emotions on his non existent sleeve.

Her cousin happily allows Hatsuki to lead her, and when they arrive, she opens her eyes again to see...

And her lips scrunch up as Nadeshiko does EVERYTHING in her power not to laugh. What on earth? There's a small flush to her cheeks -- why would anyone want to paint me like THAT? -- and then -- is THAT how I look? -- and then -- why farting? -- and then --

"Why him?"

Perhaps she's insulted the painter -- she'll need to talk to this Mikan. But Choudai's inclusion seems strange; perhaps he's the intended target of whatever message this work is meant to send? It's absolutely perplexing, though Mikan's technical skill impresses her, especially given it must have been painted in the span of three days.

Well, she's been through worse. Nadeshiko looks to Hatsuki, still doing her best to remain her composure even though the absurdity of it makes the Crane desperately want to laugh. She wouldn't want to insult the Kakita a second time.

Hatsuki calmed a little bit at seeing her cousin's reaction, and cast around the room subtly to see Choudai's. Well... if neither of them seemed particularly upset, she supposed she could be less angry. For now, anyway. "Perhaps we should seek her out and ask her later this evening? I was having a fascinating discussion the other day about intent versus perception in art, and I would love to see your and her thoughts on the subject."
