She takes a long breath, trying to imagine the armies and grand city...now ruined. Glorious and terrible, all of it. "I do not want to see such times, but it sounds like quite a life to have lived them. Have you seen the new capitol to compare them? I'd imagine the Crane's time there gave it beauty, at least."

For that matter, "did you see the Emperor, or Empress, after those times?" She shakes her head slightly with a jingle, "I don't expect to ever see her, so even seeing one for a bit sounds amazing."

"it's heartbreaking, but also a wonderful gift to be able to remember the throne of the Hantei as it stood for so long. But in a decade or a few there will be no living mortal that has stood there. And that truth is good, despite how some might feel. Because it proves that among all the bad things that have happened, the spirit of humanity and the empire cannot be stopped. We can and will find ways to defeat our opponents and move forward with Tengoku's blessing."

"Also yes, I've seen the empress and Tohsi Ranbo. But I retuned home after his sacrifice. I don't think I ever felt so devastated as when I heard the words of his death poem. I had spent so long devoted to fighting for his vision, but the finality of that moment hurt more than anything else I ever experienced before or since. Not to say that the Empress was not worthy of my loyalty or life. But Toturi-shiryo was my battle commander for nearly two decades for whom I bled and fought for. I could not stay there with that monumental sense of loss."

She shakes her head. "I'm a bit sad to think of it never being seen again, and to never have seen the world ruled over by Hantei-kami's descendants. But I suppose that for those living then, it was just the way things were. As now the Toturi have the Heaven's blessing and that's the way things are. We don't study or fight or eat any different, I guess." Remembering her stones, she sets a slab aside, nodding for the shopkeeper to wrap them up. "Do you think it will matter if one's ancestors were here in the days of the Hantei or not? Will those arriving after be less..." she searches for words, "less a part of the Empire?" With the Unicorn getting at least some new members from the Sands all the time, it's a relatively valid concern for the clan.

Her eyes are sympathetic, talking about the loss of the first Toturi emperor. "It shook everyone, really. I have to imagine the death of an emperor always does. But I can't imagine how it was to those who actually knew him." A solid reason to retire, she thinks.

"I think that no matter where anyone's ancestors were in the world they still lived under the heavens. If Tengoku did not believe a people should be considered members of the Empire it would be made known, undoubtedly. And There has been no call for such in history as far as I am aware. Blood from the Kami exists in each clan and family. To claim one doesn't belong is to claim none belong," Jakuchou replies with a smile. "If different traditions were not welcome in the empire, there would be no clans and everyone would be an imperial."

History wasn't really her strong point, so she'd trust that all fit in there, but..."There's places where different traditions aren't all that welcome, honestly. Quite a lot of traditions from the lands on the other side of the Burning Sands are unwelcome. Though some crafts have gained acceptance slowly."

She rummages in her satchel for a coin to set on the market wagon's edge, but then continues rummaging, eventually emerging with a small bead, already fitted with a bail to attach to some bit of jewelry. It's a pure white, marbled with dark inclusions that glitter here and there. The bead is carved in into a soft, cloudlike, irregular shape. "Can I give you this, Mirumoto-sama? I haven't known what I made it for, but now I think it's for you. It's a stone associated with wisdom sometimes and I tried to find the shape of thought with it. It's been an honor to hear of the things and history you've seen, and...um...thank you." The pendant is held out, resting on her palm, long enough to halfway cross it.
