(D5, EE) Chatting about Chugo (Discussion)

One might say it was Chugo that assembled the guests in the gallery, discussing the various depictions of Duty. Soon the judges would perform their Duty, assessing the works and seeing what was sublime and what was merely good. Still, there was plenty of time to talk before that.

As his display had required he monopolize two fellow competitors' time, Choudai was very happy to have gone first.
And having bolted his rice ball and dried fish, he was once again at loose ends.

Yakuwari, looking hollow again, finds his spot and begins his chronicle.
On the day dedicated to Duty, Bayushi Choudai again began the submissions, cooking for himself and others once again. The meal was much more traditional than the previous day's, to be certain, and his own restraint was admirable.
Where has she gone, the blooming flower?

Despite having taken some of her time, she stepped up to Choudai when she saw he was free. It had been a rough day. She wasn't too much in the mood for trying to expand her horizons. Choudai was the comfort food of people to her.
"The meal was delicious, Bayushi-san."

He bowed politely.
"This one is happy to have been of some small service, Shosuro-san. Thank you for assisting with my presentation."
All true. And if the day's miserable start had given him a bit of extra impetus to make sure the meal he served her was superb, well, that was simply life.

Sighing, Yakuwari continues his work. Duty makes its demands of all.
Following the Bayushi's presentation, Kitsune Shizenko presented another installation of origami. The focus on the animals in her small Clan's charge was evident, a duty assumed but not less valuable for its limited scope.
Horiuchi Shuriyani offered a detailed sword setting, one bespeaking the many duties a samurai must perform in life. The Heavens were not neglected in the work, which encompassed a full set of fittings for a blade--not merely tsuba, as is often presented.
Bayushi Amieko made a submission, as well, and was followed by Shosuro Hatsuki, plying her skills in makeup. It was an improvement over her previous performance, to be certain.
Asahina Asano offered a painting that reminds us that duty extends even to the ancestors and spirits. We cannot do less than they.

Akuba examines the first presentation as it is made.
"One wonders what such a meal would seed in a lucky field," she observes, then looks to her husband.

Kyoukasha shrugs.
"The question about whether cooking is an art resurfaces to my mind. This seems less about the food and more about the performance." was his assessment.

Akuba proceeds to the next.
"How quaint" is all she says of it.

Yakuwari attends closely and writes.
The ronin Tsi Hamada followed with an impressively detailed depiction of what appeared to be a family, making a burnt offering of a meal for them. It seems that even on the waves, the right-minded observe their duties to the ancestors. It is a curious thing, but perhaps it speaks to the essential nature of virtue.
I shall be having to do some more research.

"Of course. I'm happy to help with whatever you need," she agreed with a small nod, smiling slightly behind her fan. Of course, she had to keep her face exposed for judgment, so she dropped it quickly.
"Honestly, it made me think I might want to learn to cook at some point."

Akuba moves on, considering for some time.
"Quite detailed," she admits.
"But a story too heavily embellished makes one wonder what is being obscured."

Hyoukasha took his time considering the story as a whole, told through the many intricate detailed pieces.
"The story ends when the sword is drawn." is his only comment.

Two presentations follow in succession.
"A technique of the Void," Akuba says of the first.
Of the second, she remarks "There are reasons for sorrow, indeed" as she looks over it in detail.

He merely nodded in acknowledgement of the Scorpion's flute playing before moving on.
"Hm, the artist seems to have been inspired beyond their already inspired creations." he noticed.

Yakuwari's brush continues, and he spills onto another sheet.
Matsu Inori presented an inspired painting on duty, one perhaps autobiographical in nature--rare for a Matsu, but not unwelcome to see for one who knew her in childhood.
Kakita Mikan also presented work.
Mirumoto Jakuchou danced well, although the degree to which the dance corresponded with the theme of duty was not clear. The same could not be said of the presentation of Legionnaire Kaiu Kunio, whose heraldic work was detailed and bespoke the progress even of an opponent of his ancestors. The acknowledgement of duty even in the enemy is a worthy thing.

"Indeed? Presumably after the competition, I expect Shosuro-san is most busy..."
And watching the Crane try to figure out WHERE I cooked that ox meat has made the entire trip worthwhile. Idiots. I cooked it in proper Unicorn fashion. Over a fire outside. No way was I getting that shit in MY kitchen.
But try getting them to believe that.
"... but I could perhaps help find a tutor later?"
His mind was racing. There were so many recipes from Obachan's cookbooks for expecting mothers, new mothers, dealing with postpartum depression... in a perfect world, he would be making them for her himself, but things weren't perfect, and never had been.
